SFJAZZ Hotplate: Cannonball Adderley

at Amnesia

Larry De La Cruz reinterprets the music of alto sax legend Cannonball Adderley in a Hotplate tribute chalked full of funky goodness. Includes front burner session on the life and times of Cannonball Adderley, led by SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca Mauleón.

About Cannonball Adderley

The undisputable master of the alto sax, Cannonball Adderley had a unique sound that was communicated through every note he played. From his early beginnings in the Miles Davis sextet to his later work with his own quintet (which included such notables as Joe Zawinul, Bill Evans & Charles Lloyd), Cannonball always seemed to excel in any situation thrown his way. However, it was his articulate presentation of his music that helped catapult him to the high ranks of the jazz world, frequently explaining to the crowd what tune he was about to play.

About Larry De La Cruz No stranger to the Hotplate series, Larry De La Cruz is a tried and true staple of the local jazz community. Having worked with likes of Bobby Hutcherson, Dave Liebman, Mike Zilber & Donald Harrison, De La Cruz also makes up 1/3 of the group Mo’Fone, one of the funkiest jazz projects ever to come out of the Bay Area. Larry's dynamic soloing can range from Coltrane-esque runs on up-tempo tunes to soulful wails on slower ballads. Whatever the genre, Larry's energetic style and musical sensitivity are immediately recognizable, and always memorable.
