History Lesson

Fort Mason was built by the Spanish in 1776 and was originally named the Post at Point San Jose. The fort came under U.S. ownership when California entered the Union in 1848 and was re-activated in 1863 to defend against potential Confederate attacks. Fort Mason remains a partner of the National Park Service.

BATS Improv Theatre is a fifteen-time Best of the Bay winner for improv shows, but did you know they have classes too? Join a six-week series at the Bayfront Theater at Fort Mason Center to learn all the secrets of being a great improvisational actor. It’s not about wit or talent, it’s about knowing the tricks of the trade.

You’ll get comfortable with your classmates and a rock star instructor by playing games and letting loose before delving into the wonderful world of improv. Let your inner child run wild or stretch your inner thespian as you explore the deepest jungles of Africa or jump into a cab with a stranger -- all from the stage of course. It’s no wonder it’s been called “daycamp for grown-ups.”

Most students are there just to have a great time, but who knows. You could end up on stage with the pros.
