Drink and Speak Easy

at Bourbon & Branch

Take a swig of San Franciscan history in this speakeasy that dates back to Prohibition-era. With a secret entrance, a library room, and mixologists aplenty, it’s like a history lesson and a game of Clue, all rolled into one memorable night on the town.

Since 1921, Bourbon & Branch has been brewing trouble (and booze) from this secretive Tenderloin parlor. When John J. Russell opened the bar ninety years ago, he meant business – a motto that rings true today. Bartenders here are masters of their craft, so as their house rules say, “don’t even think of ordering a cosmo.” Whether patrons order the Devil’s Advocate, the Sexy Summer Dress, or the Democrat, they’ll savor the elusive drinks that were once prohibited – and now re-invented – with those timeworn techniques.

Lovers of gin, rye, and bourbon flock to this joint, as does anyone in search of the perfectly mixed drink. Beyond the renegade history of its hallowed walls, B&B is quite simply a testament to the timelessness of a well-constructed cocktail.

Pro Tip

"Nearly 100 years later, the place is still packed to the brim so make sure to book a reservation in advance. Parties of 4 tend to work best.

In true speakeasy fashion, B&B does require a password for entrance (it's “books”). " — The Sōsh Concierge

Pro Tip

"Make sure to book reservations for a private table for you and your guests. Why? Because you get a much larger selection of specialty cocktails that are not available at the Library." — Jennifer Kye
