This just in: There’s a rainforest in San Francisco. OK, so it’s not a real rainforest, but this fern-flanked urban oasis feels like one. You’ll go around the mountain and catch glimpses of the Golden Gate through the trees. Along the way, you can see Sutro Tower at the top, where a spa-like eucalyptus grove stands.
Bikes and dogs are also welcome. For a more rigorous workout, Mount Sutro has great urban running trails too.
Wear long pants and long-sleeved tops to keep warm and protect against poison oak. Wear waterproof shoes and rain-gear.
Acres of silvery eucalyptus create a dense canopy of green, almost a rainforest. A large meadow area at the summit invites you to picnic on a marble bench, surrounded by wild herbs and flowers, the Sutro Tower looming over us.
If you walk into the forest today, it doesn’t feel like you’re in the heart of the city. On a foggy day, inside the forest may be the most beautiful place in all San Francisco. (Muddy, but ethereal.)
Over forty species of birds frequent the woods so in addition to the creaking of trees and rustling of leaves, you may hear the hammering of the downy woodpecker or at dusk, the soft resonant hooting of the Great Horned Owl.
