Every Tuesday is Taco Day in salsa-loco San Francisco, with bars throughout the city offering stuffed tortillas to their patrons at exceptionally reasonable prices. The origins of this particular feast day are lost to history, but we do know that Nick Fasanella's Nick's Crispy Tacos and the Underdogs sports bar host the best Taco Tuesday in town.
The pescado taco ($3.75) is to die for. These are a selection of fresh fish, fried up crispy in a beer batter, served in a corn tortilla with crunchy cabbage, a few onions, a sprig of cilantro, fresh picante, and a touch of lime mayonnaise to add a bright citrus flavor with a creamy texture.
If you’re willing to splurge on a few extra calories, any taco can be served “Nick’s Way”, i.e., an additional crispy (fried) tortilla is added, along with guacamole and jack cheese.
The place gets pretty packed, especially on Taco Tuesdays, where tacos are only $2 a pop. Be prepared to wait in line. The weird thing is that they have these posh, velvet couches to chill out on, and lots of TVs to zone out on while you wait. The decor may seem a bit confusing, its like a night club serving ... tacos. Strange but satisfying — and your wallet won’t complain.
