Carnival Drinks & Dancing
at Playland
Playland takes inspiration from an old amusement park, which is clear in its marquee signs, carnival food-based drinks, twinkling lights, and boisterous spirit. It's much like the rest of Polk Street's institutions, but it has something the competition doesn't: a second-story dance floor that looks over the hustle and bustle of the street.
Playland takes its name from the long-gone amusement park that used to sit beside Ocean Beach, and though we don't see any Skee-ball or Whack-a-Mole, there are marquee lights overhead, some various eclectic trinkets decorating the bar, and a smoke-breathing bull’s head imported from Guadalajara.

Michael Brennan redid the two-story lounge-y interior, and as you can probably surmise, there’s a distinct amusement park feel — little flairs like carnival lights, tamborine monkeys and funhouse mirrors, plus incoming installations like a roller coast drink board above the bar.
