Antique Cocktail Den

at Reed And Greenough

Named after a circa-1906 feed supply store that was looted for wood used to build its Scott St facade, R&G is an antique-looking gentleman's cocktail-ery in the Marina (from the dude behind Tortilla Heights and Fishbowl) armed with vintage-looking leather couches, rich mahogany... um... everything, and a shuffleboard table in back that's 20ft long, also the suit size worn by Gheorghe Muresan.

Since Reed & Greenough was a vodka and gin distillery, they'll be the main focus of cocktails. They boast "the fastest beer in town," with pints filling in less than 2 seconds from any one of their 10 taps. We're interested in seeing how that doesn't foam up. Additionally they'll have 5 signature and 5 classic cocktails made with fresh ingredients and 10 wines on tap.

"We envisioned it as a place where you can go back in time. Imagine a swank men's club in the early 1900s with antique leather sofas where people are drinking whiskey," she says. Agins scoured antiques stores and flea markets around the world over the course of nine months for the décor, including a leather sofa culled from Atlanta, pieces from England, a billboard from the East Coast, and a map of the Thames River. "I wanted to reference time and give it a sense of history," she says. Agins also calls it an "ageless" space; "it doesn't matter your age, you could be 21 or 51, and you'll still enjoy it."

As sophisticated as I'm sure it will be, Reed & Greenough will also have a lighthearted attitude. Agins wallpapered the ladies' room with pages from a 1940s-'50s magazine called Love, which has amusing articles like "How to Keep Your Man on His Toes." "It has a kitschy love theme," says Agins, "not romantic love."
